It’s time to embrace reality. There’s no more denying it. This new year is also going to have Mondays and today is the first. So far, 2016 has been filled with alarm-free mornings and Netflix on the couch and lots of pizza. It’s been wonderfully free of emails and metro delays. And now it will be difficult to face the truth—2016 is going to have a lot of similarities to 2015. First and foremost, I will have to be responsible and go to work.
The good thing is that we can make it through together. There will be struggles. There will be temptations. But we’ve faced Mondays before and we can handle it. This one won’t be that different from the others we’ve conquered. Mostly, we’ll all just have to stop for a moment before we write the date and then comment to one another about how strange it is to write a 6 instead of a 5. I feel like we can manage that challenge.
For my part, I’m going to try and hang on to the calm joy I honed last weekend. I’m also going to try not to swear aggressively at the people who annoy me and instead wait until they’ve walked far enough away that they can’t hear me. Because I exude kindness wherever I go.
